“Testosterone-What Makes Men – Men”

April 17, 2008, North Palm Beach, FL-Healthy Living and Longevity Medical Center Founder Harlan C. Bieley, M.D., says countless men are testosterone deficient and few know it. Testosterone levels gradually decline as a man ages, decreasing approximately 1.5 percent per year after age 30. The effects of low testosterone levels include a pervasive sense of fatigue, decreased muscle mass, strength and bone density, insulin resistance, decreased sex drive, poor erections, and irritability, feelings of depression and loss of self confidence. The most prevalent causes of testosterone decrease are aging and suppression by drugs and disease. A recent report in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed that over a four-year period of time men who have low testosterone levels after age 40 may have a higher risk of death than those with normal levels of the hormone.

Doctor Bieley stated emphatically, “Men must understand the critical importance of testosterone to overall wellness and healthy aging. Be it physically, mentally or sexually, if men are to feel and function at their optimum level, testosterone is the fuel. Life’s journey without a full tank of testosterone is going to be a trip cut short and one devoid of its full potential for enjoyment.” Testosterone replacement therapy is not for every man. But the overall benefits to an individual’s quality of life are too numerous to ignore.

Among the many benefits associated with testosterone replacement therapy are decreased heart disease, reduced hypertension, decreased inflammation, reduced risk of obesity, improved control oftype 2 diabetes, improved mental clarity, improved sexual function, and decreased irritability and depression. Doctor Bieley comments, “The health and lifestyle media have finally begun to pay more attention to the issues associated with low testosterone, but they have been slow to bring news of the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy.” He continued, “All too much emphasis has been placed on testosterone and its association with performance enhancing drugs and illegal steroid abuse or sports doping.”

Demonizing testosterone means that countless men will continue to suffer needlessly. How dynamic the suffering, is unique to every man. Testosterone replacement is a balancing act and should be performed by a physician experienced with the therapy. Dr. Bieley commented, “This is customized medicine, not one therapy fits all. Testosterone replacement therapy is undoubtedly beneficial for many men.” Dr. Bieley finished his thought, “In this instance, I am the town crier. I put this information out to the public in hopes that they will use it. The more informed people are, the better equipped they are to make decisions regarding their own health and wellness. At the end of the day it’s their life.” Testosterone therapy is becoming an increasingly common aspect of healthy aging medicine. In 2006, over 3 million prescriptions were written for testosterone therapy. Failure to properly diagnose and treat testosterone deficiency can have long term negative consequences.
